Sam Cooke was born in Clarksdale, MS on January 22, 1931. He began as a Gospel singer with the Soul Stirrers but became a major pop star in the mid-50's. He died tragically & mysteriously in LA on December 11, 1964.

Okeh (pronounced okay) began in 1916 in New York. It issued the first blues 78: Crazy Blues by Mamie Smith in 1920 and continued to be a powerhouse in blues 78s until 1932. It has been a subsidiary of Columbia since 1926.

Duke Records was begun in Memphis in 1952 by David Mattis and Bill Fitzgerald and taken over and moved to Houston that same year by legendary record man Don Robey. Sold to ABC Dunhill in 1973, it soon became defunct.

Rev. Franklin was a renowned preacher from Sunflower, Mississippi. He moved to Detroit in 1946, where independent label J.V.B. recorded many of his sermons. He was Aretha Franklin's father.
