Robert "Wolfman" Belfour

February 25, 2015 - Robert "Wolfman" Belfour passed away at his home at age 74.

Born just south of Holly Springs, Mississippi, and the heart of Hill Country Blues, Robert Belfour was surrounded by other Hill Country Blues artists such as Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner, and R.L. Burnside. Throughout the years, he was known to play frequently in Memphis, TN and in Clarksdale, MS.

Grant Belfour, Robert's father, taught him to play the guitar and later, after his father's death, was influenced by Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins. In the 1960's he and his wife moved to Memphis and he put aside his musical ambition to support family by working in construction.

He began performing in clubs on Beale Street in the 80's and his career really began in the 90's. Released in 1994, Dr. David Evans compilation album "The Spirit Lives On: Deep South Country Blues and Spirituals in the 1990's" featured a number of Belfour's songs. Then, in 2000, Fat Possum Records released Robert's album "What's Wrong with You" and in 2003, released "Pushin' My Luck". Both albums garnered high praise.

For nearly twenty years, you could easily have found him performing at the Southern Blues Festivals and at the clubs in Clarksdale and Memphis.

The Blues Foundation's HART Fund has generously paid for Robert's funeral expenses. The Killer Blues Headstone Project has offered to pay for and place a headstone for the gravesite. The Memphis Blues Society has also raised additional funds for the burial and family.
