Expanding the Experience
Since its creation in 1979, the Delta Blues Museum has worked to preserve, interpret, and encourage a deep interest in the story of the Blues.
We are the oldest music museum in Mississippi, and we honor the culture and the musicians that shaped this deeply rooted art form.
As a public educational institution, our vision is to ‐
Encourage a deep interest in the story of the Blues and those who shape, play and preserve it
Foster a clear and a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the Blues and other forms of American music
Provide relevant, creative educational programs, performances, exhibits and visitor experiences
Create a museum environment where ideas are shared with objectivity and respect for our diverse audiences
With this vision in mind, the Delta Blues Museum has launched its Deeper Roots campaign, to raise $1.2 million designated to expand current exhibits and create new installations. This will enable us to offer new and expanded exhibits that feature the history of Clarksdale's Blues culture, as told by the musicians and the music they created.
Telling a Deeper Story
Visitors will learn about the music, how it evolved into what we think of as the Blues in the Mississippi Delta and how it spread globally.
New exhibits in the Muddy Waters Addition will focus heavily on the 1940's documentation of Blues in Coahoma County and the "discovery" of Muddy Waters, showcasing his former home from Stovall Plantation. Other sections will showcase The Migration of the genre and its outgrowths. The experience will also look at how the Delta Blues is alive and well in Clarksdale and in the world today.
The Museum's permanent collection will be augmented with items and artifacts on loan from artists and collectors from around the world
New and expanded exhibits will utilize film, video and, of course, music ‐ listening stations and interactive kiosks will offer visitors a chance to hear the music created by these artists and follow its development from Africa to modern day.
But to fully realize this vision, we need your help to fund the Deeper Roots campaign, for the Delta Blues Museum and the history it holds. The Museum relies on contributions to support the creation of exhibitions, public and educational programs, publications and collections. Our unique position as a museum that explores music and popular culture allows us to serve as a gateway to the music of the Mississippi Delta, sounds that shaped the music of the world, in a way few organizations can rival.

"The Blues represent the roots of American Music. And as Mississippi's oldest music museum, the Delta Blues Museum represents the heart and soul of the Blues - not by honoring an industry or any one individual, but by honoring the culture and the musicians that shaped this art form. The DEEPER ROOTS campaign will provide state-of-the-art educational features for the museum, including exhibits for the new Muddy Waters Addition - a 7,300 square-foot expansion of the museum's facility in downtown Clarksdale. Join me in support of the DEEPER ROOTS campaign, and help the Delta Blues Museum tell an even deeper story of the Blues for generations to come."
Morgan Freeman, acclaimed actor and supporter of blues history and the Mississippi region

I support the DEEPER ROOTS campaign and want others to do the same, to help the Delta Blues Museum tell an even deeper story of the Blues."
