Drive the Great River Road
on Highway 61
The blues was born and raised along the Mississippi River and Highway 61, the road that runs next to it for 3,000 miles through 10 states, from northern Minnesota to New Orleans. The Great River Road maps the rich musical heritage of this "river of song".
This month, we’re celebrating "Drive the Great River Road Month" with one of our partners, the Mississippi River Parkway Commission. From Memphis to Clarksdale, the famed Highway 61 is the main route through "the land where the blues began".
Check out River and the Road to the Blues, an interactive, "Explore and Learn" program on our website. A series of blues musicians’ maps describes the musical histories of the Great River Road's 10 states and lists the blues artists who lived and worked there.
Our Gift Shop offers many souvenirs of Highway 61, "the blues highway", and the Mississippi River, "Big Muddy".
