The vivid work of New Orleans-based music and fine
arts photographer Erika Molleck Goldring will be featured
in an upcoming exhibit of new photos, “Performance
Portraiture,” in the Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery
at Loyola University New Orleans.
An opening reception will kick off the show at 5 p.m.
on Thursday, Feb. 4. “Performance Portraiture”
will be displayed in the gallery Feb. 4 through April
6. Both the reception and the exhibit are free and open
to the public.
Goldring has developed her own unique style of performance
portraiture. Her character-driven portfolio features
celebrated artists such as Beyonce, Keith Richards,
Willie Nelson and Fats Domino, as well as breaking new
acts in genres such as jam, jazz, blues, reggae, blue
grass and alt-country.
“Goldring
captures the energy in a live show whether it is the
split-second a beautiful stage light falls on her subject
or the raw emotion emanating from the performer lost
in the groove,” said Karoline Schleh, director
of Loyola’s Diboll Gallery. “By eliminating
all suggestion of environment, her work speaks of the
sounds, vibrations and rhythmic idiosyncrasies distinct
to each performer.”
Goldring studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine
Art under critically acclaimed photographers Victoria
Ryan and Richard Sexton. Her work has been featured
in a number of publications including Rolling Stone,
Spin, Mojo, DownBeat, OffBeat, The New York Times, The
Chicago Sun-Times and The Times-Picayune.
She currently works as a staff photographer at the
legendary Tipitina’s and UNO Lakefront Arena.
She also has freelanced for PBS’ “Live from
the Artists’ Den.” Most recently, Goldring’s
works were accepted into the Smithsonian-affiliated
Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the
Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Miss.
